What is IP Code?

IP is short for International Protection (or Ingress Protection), which classified dust and water tight degree for enclosures.
When dust and water enters the enclosure, electrical devices might deteriorate or malfunction.

Different degrees of IP rating

IP55 stands for dust tight 5 and water tight 5.
Dust tight degree: Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment.
Water tight degree: Water projected by a nozzle against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
An IP 55 enclosure is suitable for general indoor environment.

Dust tight degree: No ingress of dust.
Water tight degree: Water projected in powerful jets against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.

NEMA4 NEMA TYPE 4
Enclosures constructed for either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against access to hazardous parts; to provide a degree of protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects (falling dirt and windblown dust); to provide a degree of protection with respect to harmful effects on the equipment due to the ingress of water (rain, sleet, snow, splashing water, and hose directed water); and that will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure.

NEMA4X NEMA TYPE 4X
Enclosure constructed for either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against access to hazardous parts; to provide a degree of protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects (windblown dust); to provide a degree of protection with respect to harmful effects on the equipment due to the ingress of water (rain, sleet, snow, splashing water, and hose directed water); that provides an additional level of protection against corrosion; and that will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure.

NEMA 12 NEMA TYPE 12
Enclosure constructed (without knockouts) for indoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against access to hazardous parts; to provide a degree of protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects (falling dirt and circulating dust, lint, fibers, and flyings); and to provide a degree of protection with respect to harmful effects on the equipment due to the ingress of water (dripping and light splashing).
